Настоящий сборник адресован учащимся четвертого класса детских музыкальных школ и детских школ искусств. В него вошли 18 разнохарактерные пьесы, отличающиеся друг от друга степенью сложности и видами фортепианной техники. Каждое произведение ставит перед юным пианистом конкретную исполнительскую цель. Все пьесы имеют программные названия, что способствует более глубокому пониманию художественного замысла и помогает учащимся выразительно передать характер музыкального образа. В начале пособия приведены методические рекомендации для каждой пьесы, призванные помочь преподавателям и учащимся в осмыслении поставленных учебно-исполнительских задач.

Теодоро Коттро (1827–1879) прославился в первую очередь как автор аранжировки и издатель популярнейшей «Santa Lucia», записанной многими великими исполнителями, в числе которых Энрико Карузо, Робертино Лоретти и др. Распространенная по всему миру и ставшая своего рода символом неаполитанской культуры, эта песня принесла композитору популярность, со временем вышедшей далеко за пределы Италии. В наследии композитора около 50 неаполитанских песен.

The cycle was being created during a long period of time, and therefore does not represent a complete whole, all preludes are diverse in genre, and each has its complete independent form. Nevertheless, there is a unity of "internal" content, a relationship of textured features, a certain unity of modal-tonal relationships. The brightness, vitality of images, the richness of expressive means and texture provided Rachmaninoff’s preludes with wide recognition and love of the audience.
